A Grade 5 Composition on The Recent Presidential Election in Nigeria by a student of Loadstar Academy Abuja 🇳🇬
Elections are clearly adult business as children and even teenagers under 18 years are not allowed to vote.  However I was very interested about the outcome of this year’s presidential election because of one of the contestants, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
I don’t really understand politics, but I often listen to my mum and dad make discussion on the need to fix our country, Nigeria. Their favourite of all the contestants is Mr. Obi and they say nice things about him.
Despite the fact that I was a minor, I got interested in this game or competition and started cheering for Peter Obi. Everyday on the television they showed something about the election, and if it is not about Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it will be Atiku Abubakar or my favourite, Peter Obi. Loadstar Academy gave us an unusual break, even my neighbours and cousins were also on break because of the election. This must be serious I thought.
Finally on the 25th of February,  I was still sleeping when I noticed that my mother was dressing up to go out. “Where is she going this early on a Saturday?” I thought within myself. “Oh today is the election, the day we have all been waiting for.”
After she left I got up and called  my father who works as a journalist in Owerri. He didn’t pick my calls, I thought it was very unusual till I remembered that he has gone out to cover the election.
Later that day my mum came back looking so happy. I really loved the energy that followed her home that day. She was hopeful for Nigeria and her hope was contagious. It rose my hope too. It wasn’t quite long that my father called  the house phone and I rushed to take the call. The voice from the other side was cheerful, convincing, and my hope raised some more.
Then anxiety set in. I couldn’t wait  for the results of the elections to be announced. I called my dad at intervals to know who won the election and he told me it had not been announced yet but reassured me that Peter Obi will emerge as the winner.
Few days later, the unfriendly news hit me and it was devastating. My favourite candidate did not win and to make matters worse, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was announced as winner.  I was sad that I had to call my father again to verify the news,  but my dad told me that Bola Tinubu and APC party rigged the election allegedly. It was very disappointing.  The morale in our family became low and everyone suddenly became ill. Our hope for a new Nigeria had been dashed.
My dad told me that all hope was not lost yet but I’m afraid because I don’t know what the future holds for us in Nigeria. The Nigeria’s Presidential Election 2023 has come and gone but the pain and uncertainty still remains.
