It is no news that all hands are geared up towards the upcoming presidential elections taking place on the 25th of February, 2023, the house of assembly elections on the 11th of March, 2023, and the Imo governorship elections on the 11th of November, 2023. Hence, the stakeholder’s meeting alongside the sign-in of the peace accord by political party chairmen in Owerri on the 16th of February, 2023.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of Imo State, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu was the first to anchor this meeting. Her speech was interactive as she created an open floor for citizens and their representatives to express their concerns on the forthcoming election.
She outlined the voting procedure that explained that voting pools will open at 8:30 am and end at 2:30 pm. Eligible voters will be given the privilege to vote if they are in the queue till after 2:30 pm. This shows that these eligible voters in the queue will be attended to before voting polls will be closed for that day.
She also added that eligible voters should be able to participate in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) with the use of their PVC before they can be allowed to participate in the forthcoming elections. The poll official should also check and ascertain the names of the voters on the voter’s register of the polling unit.
Furthermore, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu stated that all voters get authentication with BIVAS using their fingerprints or facials. The ballot papers will only be issued to voters who have been accredited.
It has been noted that the INEC Commission has published the list of eligible voters corresponding with their pollen units on the INEC Voter Verification system, which is www.cvr.inecnigeria.orgvvs or __voters.inecnigeria.org. Voters should check their names on the above link. They can also wait for the publication of hard copies with the pollen units before election day.
Unfortunately, elections will not occur in 240 pollen units across the country because there is no registration of eligible voters at that area. Out of these 240 pollen units, 38 of these are located in Imo State.
Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu later addressed the citizens as they put forth concerns on their security. She encouraged them and explained that security and law enforcement agencies will be present to arrest, investigate, and prosecute anyone involved in any violent misconduct.
Without much ado, all political party chairmen who were present on behalf of their parties and candidates were called upon individually to sign the peace accord presented by the INEC Commission.
In conclusion, the commissioner of police of Imo State, M.A Barda, has assured everyone of his presence during the election and that the lives and properties of Imo State are safe.
